Note 3 - not reading?
-
JOOC, which ring did you get? Alpha or normal?
It may also be a little touchy if you don't get it quite in the right spot. Have you verified your sweet spot with the spare tag? -
Same here, - on my Note 3 it is working with the the spare tag, but not with the normal ring. Even on my other other phone, a HTC One, I must be precise to the micro millimeter to hit that sweet spot, and even then it only works one time out of 10 attempts, which makes the ring practically unusable there as well. All other tags are recognizes by both phones if I bring them just close to the sweet spot. So the standard ring is useless to me.
Still, I ordered the collection, but since they lost my original order the other 2 rings (alpha and stealth bomber) will only be delivered with the next batch and I don't know when that will be. Communication with the folks in UK is very cumbersome (I realize I haven't ordered with Amazon, but I would have at least expected they'd be reading my mails).
This is the first time I supported a kickstarter project and it is turning into a rather frustrating and disappointing experience :( -
Hi Road-Jet,
Don't lose faith yet, the NFC Ring team will just be super busy dealing with packing and shipping, change requests and any other issues that pop up in the meantime. I've popped off a message to John regarding the Note 3/standard ring issue.
Thanks for posting and letting us know there is a potential issue here, hopefully it will be sorted out soon!As regards the rest of your order, they're coping pretty well with a huge amount of things and I'm sure that will get sorted out promptly.
-
It sounds like we might be having an issue with the note 3 and the normal ring. We don't have a note 3 here to test. Panic not.. Both you guys please email me <!-- e --><a href="mailto:support@nfcring.com">support@nfcring.com</a><!-- e --> quoting this forum post and we will send you out an alpha ring to test..
The Note 3 is that huge one right? It wouldn't surprise me if the antenna matching on it is poor because the antenna is probably huge...
Cheers for the support, I'm looking forward to your test results!

I got the note 3 to work reasonably reliably with the normal ring. There's a bit of technique to it.
Here's the sweet spot I've found:
It's most effective towards that edge, but not all the way to the edge. It might require a bit of figuring out but once you do it's not bad.

Hi Road-Jet
I've recently taken responsibility for the support department. We are sorry you had a bad experience. Would you be able to send a new message to us at support and I can investigate the E-mails that you said haven't been read so I can resolve the issue.
Thanks to Paulguy for the pic, I am using the ring with a Nexus 5 and have found the best Sweet spot to be in a similar region to the Note.
-
i can also vouch that the regular ring doesn't pick up on the Note3.
I found another sweet spot. Its almost right on the logo on the leather case Paulguy's pic -
Sometimes you can get kind of an echo of the readable area, which works but isn't quite as consistent as the sweet spot. It really is best to take everything under advisement but verify your phone's sweet spot yourself (and make sure that it's the only and best place for a read.)
-
I can still only get the spare tag to read. Anything actually in ring form doesn't work for me.
-
If you're still having difficulties and have tried everything then drop them a line at <!-- e --><a href="mailto:support@nfcring.com">support@nfcring.com</a><!-- e --> and let them know. Make sure to detail which phone and NFC Ring you're having the issues with so that they can get a good understanding of which phones are being troublesome with which rings.
-
Already done that, thanks :D
Incidentally, I'd scanned the spare tag into the NFC Ring Unlock program and tested it. I then disabled security enforcement as I didn't want to carry the spare tag around. After the last auto-update, it re-enabled security enforcement without being told to!
Fortunately you can type your gmail credentials to unlock, otherwise I would have been severely stuffed. Bug in the update, perhaps?
(Incidentally, how do you [i:49micime]delete[/i:49micime] a tag from the unlocker? I can only find the disable option…)
-
No problem, that's an interesting one with the NFC Ring app though, I'll see if Tom can answer you better.
-
Hi Tiny,
John has been working hard on the App the past few days, so there has been an update. In terms of it being a bug or not I do not know. I've posted it on github and we should get an answer.
-
@Tiny Clanger
Already done that, thanks :D
I swiped the tag in the list (either to right or left, don't remember) and that deleted it.

Hrm, this is a tough one. Being that the rings work fine but not with the Note 3 yet the lose inlays work fine on the Note 3 it makes me think somehow there is some weird tuning issue going on with your Note 3..
The best thing you could do for us is record some video of you trying to use the ring on the note3 and also showing us the inlay working in the same video. This way we can ensure the ring is oriented correctly, if you can create that video and upload it to any video sharing website and hit me up with the link that'd be great :)
*Note for posterity, I have a feeling the ring may be oriented incorrectly, it's not clear how to orient a ring and I'm not sure people are aware it makes a different to "readability"

Definitely, I noted that on the HTC One X, it refuses completely to read anything that isn't oriented horizontally to the phone when holding the phone upright (portrait as opposed to landscape).
Every single device I've played with has been like this, though some have had a completely different sweet spot when the ring has been oriented the other way, which hasn't worked quite as well as the 'proper' sweet spot. The RC522 reader I've got insists that the inlay be oriented diagonally, which is a strange one.
-
lol RC522 is weird the PN532 you can hit up from any angle just FYI.
Also today a Felica board arrived, I need to find some time to play with it, the antenna is about the same size as the ring so I'm feeling optimistic =)
-
I'm really developing a healthy dislike for the RC522, I've gotta say. PN532 is just win all the way.
Now that sounds interesting - a proper antenna match, I'm curious how far away you'll be able to trigger a read on that!
Which module did you get, I see a few there? -

I might have to come up with some complicated arrangement of mirrors in order to do that, as the Note 3 is the only device I have that can record video :D I'll certainly try all the different ring orientations first, though.@itzdarkoutthere: doh, never thought of that, despite having used iOS devices for ages before I got the Note 3. Thanks!

haha okies keep us posted :)
