RE: One side of ring stops working
That's very unusual. Are you working/living in a area where there is a lot of radio waves? Unless you rewrote the tags the whole time they should last for years.
Would the ring be more susceptible than your average ntag? I've had one on a keychain for nearly a year with no issue and a few sticker tags at my house and one at my office that still work fine.
I live in Chicago, so I would imagine the area is quite saturated with radio waves, especially in high density residential areas where everyone and their mother has wifi. My 2.5 ghz wifi has degraded performance and my apartment is on a street that is more commercial than residential. -
RE: NFC Lock Box
Have you guys seen the electronic pass code operated gun safes etc that you can pick up cheap on eBay? I wonder how hard it would be to hack one of those into working with NFC. Should be too difficult... As far as I can tell its a fail-close type solenoid that stops you twisting the unlock handle until the correct code is entered.
I'll need to get some guns first. And a foid card. I guess I could put my paintball gear in it :P

RE: Bug: Sporadically prompting unlock screen - disabled
Disabling the app as administrator seems to have solved the issue. I'm guessing it has something to do with the app monitoring failed unlock attempts.

RE: Backer Discount Code
Not sure if you mean where to find your discount code or where to enter it.
They sent an email with the backer discount codes, mine had the subject, "Limited PREORDERS now available - Your code inside." Inside was my backer discount code.
There was a textbox to enter it during checkout, I believe at the same time I was entering my payment information. -
RE: NFC Ring App and battery
Does the NFC Ring App cause the phone's battery to drain excessively? I have a Nexus 5 and just ordered the ring and want to know if anyone using the NFC Ring App to unlock sees an unusually high battery drain. Thanks.
It will be no different if you already have nfc enabled on your phone. The app doesn't change when the antenna is turned on.
I have had no noticeable change in battery life since installing and using the app. I had nfc enabled long before installing the app. -
RE: Arduino and NFC
ok, so finally got the sketch to compile. Couldn't get it working on my windows 7 installation even after reinstalling arduino software. I fired up an XP VM, installed the arduino software and the sketch compiled first try. There must be some lingering data after uninstall that I need to take care of.

RE: Elechouse PN532 NFC Module V3 for Arduino etc.
Got my elechouse today. Different distributor I believe. Doesn't seem to be working with any ntag. It came with a different lib than yours, so I will try out different libs later. Works fine with the tags that came with it.
/e got my module working with ntag using the lib from yours. Unfortunately my ring is not reading at all, looks like its finally time to give up and send in for a replacement :(

RE: NFC Lock Box
That's a neat idea. I might have to hit up the lumber yard soon and mock something up using my extra electric strike.
How big were you thinking? I'm considering building a locker for myself. That big would probably be quite expensive to ship. Anyway, sure I can throw it on my etsy store for you once it is done. Will probably take a month or so since I'll have to order some more electronics and don't have a working ring at the moment.

A simple option might be to use an solenoid or actuator as a deadbolt of sorts.Your best bet might be to cut a recess into the wood for the nfc module to sit it, leaving like 1/4". I will try something like this in the coming weeks and post results/pictures.

RE: Bug: Sporadically prompting unlock screen - disabled
The ring or the app? I sent a follow-up to my previous emails to support. I have an Elechouse pn532 that should be here today or tomorrow, so I am waiting to see if it works with it before I exchange my ring. If it works fine, I will suck up not being able to use it with my phone and just use it for my door until I get more rings.

RE: Where to buy NFC enabled locks?
I meant to post a link, forgot.
http://www.kwikset.com/electronics/homeowners/availableproducts.aspxI think the way I would set it up would be to use both the deadbolt and the lever from quickset for my main door. Maybe disable the pin code entry somehow. On the entryway use an electric strike. Two Elechouse NFC modules, one outside the entryway and one outside the main door both hooked up to an arduino inside that has zwave or zigbee. Integrate them with the almond+, and stir in some of my mad programming skills to make them all play nicely.
I suppose while I am at it, I should put my second strike on the back door to the entry way that I use when I go running. No more carrying a set of keys on my run! -
RE: Where to buy NFC enabled locks?
The Kwikset with this "homeconnect" would probably be a good option. They come with zigbee/zwave, so theoretically I could integrate them and my nfc reader with the almond+ I backed on kickstarter.... if it ever ships :P

RE: Where to buy NFC enabled locks?
Keep in mind, this is a rental, so keeping all original hardware with no modification would be best route for me. However, my landlord is in IT and we are on decent enough terms that he probably wouldn't have a problem with me replacing the deadbolt and handle so long as the door itself isn't modified.
I would likely hook the arduino with ncf reader up to my network and have it control the lockitron over it's wifi connection.
If you have other ideas to keep the original hardware on the door, I would be more than open to them.I haven't done much research, any suggestions on solutions that could replace the hardware (pic below). Ideally, it would still be able to use a key for entrance and I would definitely want to replace both the deadbolt and handle.

RE: NFCRing as a paintball marker activation device.
Yeah, that's where my mind was wandering - better fire modes/rates could probably be achieved with an arduino anyway and it would be an easy thing after that to add in the 'fire only with ring' clause in the sketch.
:O I used to have a 98 with a flatline barrel! We used to play a lot of large scale games back then, now that I live in Chicago, mostly small courses.
I never take my trigger out of semi-auto mode anyway, so programming would be quite simple!

RE: Where to buy NFC enabled locks?
@gth
Sorry, didn't see your post earlier. Don't want to quote your entire post, but i think you will follow.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003E2D59O/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1Yes, the door to my entryway only has the handle lock, so just the strike for that one. My main door has the lock on the handle and a deadbolt, so would need the lockitron and a strike for it.
So my entryway door has a metal frame. Those frames are set up perfectly for electric strikes. Wood frame doors however would require quite a bit of modification which is the case on my main door. Since I am renting, I will not be modifying that door frame :P
Electric strikes are pretty simple, and I feel like one could be designed to drop into a wooden doorframe without modification, unfortunately such a thing just does not exist.I am somewhat considering designing lockitron type setup for the main door handle, I think the handle I have would be a good candidate for it. But that is wayyyyy down the road, I have too many other projects/hobbies that take precedence.

RE: NFCRing as a paintball marker activation device.
hah, that is a pretty cool idea. I don't play paintball much these days anymore, but I still keep my gun around just in case an opportunity ever comes up!
I think to always have the ring in reading distance, this is a situation where we would want a custom antenna tuned to the ring that could run down the front of the trigger frame since that is where your ring and pinky finger normally sit. Probably also a situation where it would be beneficial to build an attiny directly into a pn532. Also makes me wonder if anyone has tried using an arduino for the trigger instead of the traditional boards.

RE: Where to buy NFC enabled locks?
Correct, the electric strike goes inside the doorframe itself. nothing about the existing door handle/locking mechanisms changes. When you use the electric strike you simply push the door open without having to turn the door knob/handle. The electric-strike itself is fail-secure meaning if it loses power it is not going to unlock. However, since you still have the original hardware in the door you can still unlock and open from the outside with a key or open the door from the inside with no problem.
I can't really speak for insurance companies.Sticking a nano in there is an interesting idea. For my project, I want it somewhere I can get easy access in case I want to modify code or anything, also I plan on running multiple locks off one unit at some point, so a central location works better.
I had same idea for battery and solar, doubt one small enough to fit in the strike housing would be powerful enough. I still need to do testing. The strikes require 12v. Not sure how much current (is that the right word? I'm a programmer, not an EE) they draw. -
RE: No Carbon Fiber?!?! What the deuce?!
I just wanted to thank you guys for putting on an awesome Kickstarter. Almost all of them have as many if not more issues than we have seen with the NFC Ring. However, very few I have been a part of can compare to the communication NFC Ring has had with the backers. Even less have delivered at least something so quickly.
Keep up the awesome work!
