unlock during alarm

  • Hi,

First of all, thanks for the ring delivery. Its performing well and works great, but with the Apps I encountered some problems.

When my phone (nexus 5) wakes me up in the morning, I have to unlock the phone with the ring before I can switch off the alarm. Thats not really great. Is there any way to avoid this?
I already have the option "unlock during phone call" active.

Another thing which would be great to be fixed is that I had to switch-off my 2-way authorization with Google to be able to unlock the device without the ring. Are there plans to support this in future revisions?

    Thanks,
    lobi

    Hi @lobi

Awesome to hear that you've got your ring!
Unfortunately I don't think there's a way to make the phone unlock for the alarm currently and I don't think one will be implemented - such a thing would dramatically lower the security of the lock.
From my point of view I've found it useful but then I'm one of those people who has 4 different devices with multiple alarms each to make sure I wake up. Having to use the ring ensures that I can't pretend I'm awake and just switch it off!
You should be able to leave 2 factor on, just as long as you have a way of switching it off again if you do lose your ring. Or to bypass that need entirely I'd suggest getting a cheap stick-on NTAG203 off ebay and program it in as a backup unlock key, then stick it on your desk or bedside table or something. I have one on my desk in a non-obvious but easily accessible place programmed and locked to permanent read only.

  • I believe it would help somehow hook into android oficial lock/unlock mechanism. Things like Face recognition unlock have all this solved. It is not just alarm app (which BTW anoy me as hell almost every morning), but there are apps like Sports Tracker or camera app which live above original lock/unlock app. All those apps doesn't work as expected with NFC ring.

Guys, you can add these issues as feature requests on github or in lafunamor's thread here in the app section.

you can setup a pin code as alternative login (with in the app).

  • I agree with nax - I can snooze/dismiss alarm without unlocking when using standard Android security; it makes sense to be able to do so.

At the moment the unlock app is usable on standard un-rooted devices which kinda limits the things that it can actually do. Once NFC becomes part of core android things should be a little easier, it's just getting to that point.
Standard android security is part of the android core, so other apps like the alarm can hook through and make themselves known without actually breaching the security - if you're using the unlock app though, the only way to do it would be to switch off the unlock when the alarm goes off. This would dramatically lower your security and pretty much make it pointless IMO.

  • Got it - definitely CBA with NFC unlock at 0600, 0605, 0610 etc for the snoozes! Will have to wait until NFC is more integrated, I guess. Thanks,

  • If your android is rooted you could try this Xposed Module. I haven't tried it yet but I will when my rings arrive.
Basicly it hooks into the standard android lockscreen and bypasses it when it recognize an authorized tag. Also it can automaticly anable an disable NFC by your androids lock-state.

@Robinhuett I use this Xposed module on my Xperia M as well as the NFC Unlock app, and it works very well. With the lockscreen off I can turn the phone on, pause a second and then it's unlocked. It's very convenient.
But rooting your device is not for everyone and I'd recommend that anyone who does decide to go that route research properly what it will mean for their device before they do it. Some devices lose important functionality permanently when they're rooted.

  • @Lokki Thanks for pointing that out. I tend to forget to point the risks out because I modded my phones since my first android..
ohhh, when I remeber all the lost data I could have avoided :(

@Robinhuett I looked into rooting my Z2 tablet and decided against it because it means unlocking the bootloader and losing the DRM keys permanently as well as losing Bravia engine functionality. So, pass on that until they find a workaround that doesn't do that!

@lobi something else I'd like to point out here is that you don't need to turn off 2 step authentication, you just need to create an app specific key. Using 2 step means your actual account password is no longer valid for devices/programs that can't be verified via 2 step so you need that app specific password.
It can be created by going to your google account, security settings and choosing to generate a new one.
You can circumvent this entire experience by setting a PIN for unlock in the app as well.
The PIN will allow access when you're in flight mode and cannot authenticate via the google servers.

ah, thanks for that hint. Thats really helpful. Didnt think about this option :).
Regarding the alarm I still think its better to be able to turn it off without the ring unlock. I am still hoping for improvement in this direction ;)

That one's difficult @lobi, because the unlock app is trying to do things purely in userspace that are a lot easier with root access. It's bringing the NFC unlock to the people who for one reason or another aren't using rooted android devices.
